President George Bush has signed a $162B war spending bill. The money is to be used to fund the ongoing fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. “This bill shows the American people that even in an election year, Republicans and Democrats can come together to stand behind our troops and their families.”, Bush says. But from my understanding, the Democrats have tried and tried again to pull those troops out and limit Bush’s power in terms of conducting war. What does the public think?

“Imagine the good that kind of money could do in a place like Burma, or even towards reconstructing New Orleans (far from over). If this sort of money was put towards researching alternatives to fossil fuels we would all be driving electric cars and getting electricity from completely emission free power plants in a few short years. What a waste.”

“If I read that correctly, that is a total of about 850 Billion spent in total between Afghanistan and Iraq. To put that in perspective, that’s over $2800 for every person in America, or about 75% of Canada’s entire GDP. That is no small sum of money!”

“Bush will do anything to keep his oil and the weapons industry booming; in the meantime he is taking the US population into poverty. When it comes to terrorism this guy and his associates win the gold medal.”

“Worst President in history wants to keep the illegal war in Iraq going even after he and his party are going to be given junk bond status in the 2008 election. Bush, jail is where you belong after it`s all done.”

“Now that the US has control of the world’s 2nd largest active oil field, $400 million of that amount is being directed to continue a covert operation inside Iran to set the stage for an invasion.

Brought to you by the three torpedoes, Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld.

God, will someone please off this trio?

Something has to be done to erase Carter’s doctrine of blending US energy security and foreign policy. It has destroyed millions of human lives and has helped bring irreparable ruin to the world’s ecosystem and environment.”

“G W Bush is brilliant….

1) Bush puts his own country into a trillion dollar debt.
2) Democrats win the upcoming presidential election.
3) Democrats have to raise taxes to pay down the U.S. national debt.
4) Republicans win in four years because Republicans always cut taxes while Democrats always raise taxes because they have to clean up the mess the Republicans leave behind.”

“Bush is war criminal and there is no question. Only problem is that the US has refused to sign on to the International Court of Justice for fear of countless US politicians, mostly Republicans, to be indicted as such.

Bush, in his fabricated War of Terror has not only been responsible for more deaths than every terror organization in the world combined, but has racked up more debt than all prior presidents combined. Think about that and for what? 9/11? when there is as much evidence, if not more, than implicates many members of the Bush cabinet; find any Boening airplane parts at the Pentagon yet? A Boeing passenger plane never hit the Pentagon and there is no proof to back up that stupid claim, but Flintstone has beat me to the punch with his reference to the doc. Loose Change, which asks some serious questions about how right wing governments in the west are getting away with the iggest scam ever for oil profiteering: the US War of Terror.

Afghanistan has very little to do with human rights. It is about controlling the opium trade and finishing the US gas pipeline through the region from the break away Soviet Republics to the Asiatic Sea.

See …”Afghanistan accounted for 92 percent of global illicit opium production, up from 70 percent in 2000 and 52 percent a decade earlier. The higher yields in Afghanistan brought global opium production to a record high of nearly 7,300 tons last year, a 43 percent increase over 2005.

The area under opium poppy cultivation…also expanded, from nearly 257,000 acres in 2005 to more than 407,000 acres in 2006-an increase of about 59 percent.”

Why is it that opium production has increased since the War of Terror arrived?

Momofasolider, which war are speaking of that the US has fought that brought Canadians freedom? Persian Gulf? Vietnam? Korea? Or WWII when the US did not enter the war until 1942, when your President knew full well of the concentrations camps, while Canada was sending troops in starting in 1939. Spare us the failed US righteous nous, the US is the biggest threat to world peace on the earth and our solider are now dying for your countries’ foreign policy blunders and lies by your politicians that created this entire multi-trillion dollar farce of a terror industry for oil companies to profiteer, which Harper loves.

The US is a sham when it comes to democracy and it makes me sick that 27 million people were stupid enough to re-elect this convicted criminal and admitted cocaine user.”

“Where does Bush come up with these billions when he has a deficit and a 9 trillion dollar debt.

How does that work? Does the fed print it for him? That could be their inflation problems right there which will obviously be getting worse with this fresh batch.

Or does he give China call? Does he have to OK it with them first or does he have a running line of credit?”

“Sure Bush has a bad reputation, but don’t let that cloud our judgment of the entire situation (i.e. terrorism). The way I see it I would prefer to be living next to the States (despite our Canadians’ love-hate relationship with them: we love their holywood and economy, but are enviously small in the shadow of their hegemony).

People who are up-in-arms over this claimed Imperialistic move must have a short memory of how we got our own country. We didn’t just fall out of the sky into this left-wing pie-in-the-sky country we now live in, which breeds ignorance and a myriad of armchair politicians. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Palestine to name a few of the countries that were under British rule until up until last century (and Canada only received it’s nationhood in the 1980’s for those who didn’t know).

Perhaps the oponents to Western Imperialism would prefer to contend with Islamic imperialism, which does not let you keep your own culture, religion, and language (as the British allowed the French in Quebec to do). Perhaps they prefer their human rights report card along with their view of women. I would like to see the opponents of conservative governments here in the west attempt the same level of dissent with the goverment of countries they claim to support.”

“What a brilliant strategy. People think Bush is stupid but he’s setting the stage for the Democrats’ to get one hell of a mess to clean up, and since the american voter is so short sighted, it’s whoever’s in government that they always blame. Only thing is, the way he’s screwing North American economy affects us too much. It’s time for us to seek other business partners before we go down with them.”

“While I am 100% opposed to the war in Iraq and think that far too much money has been spent on it, not to mention the thousands of innocent lives that have been lost, I do support a bill that makes sure the American soldiers and their families are properly cared for when they return. A huge number of them carry physical, emotional and psychological scars that will affect them and their families for the rest of their lives.

The US government made the decision to send these soldiers to war — now it must find the money to properly care for them when they come back. That is one of the many terrible costs of war that every responsible government must figure into its decision to become involved in military conflict.”

“I think most people can agree that soldiers can’t be held accountable for the merits of any war. When critics attack a war like the present US-Iraq one, they aren’t criticizing the soldiers. They’re criticizing those who sent them there - the politicians. You can argue that our soldiers overseas help protect the quality of life here in North America. But I would argue a better way to help protect it is to not meddle in the affairs of other nations. Yes, there are many human-rights attrocities that should be dealt with. But that isn’t why we fight the wars we do - otherwise countries like the US would primarily be in places like Sudan, Rwanda, Congo, Nepal, & Colombia to name a few. The biggest reason for anti-western animosity in places like Iraq, Iran, & Afganistan is western influence over the past fifty or so years.

I wonder how appreciative we’d be if France decided to send an occupying force to ensure that Canadians all have affordable childcare? Or how welcoming the US might be if Canada sent troops south of the border to ensure health care for all Americans? Why then is it okay for us to tell everyone else how to run their countries? Or do you still believe in WMD’s?”

I would never encourage my son or daughter to go to war, and fight a holy war for a purpose we do not even know is right.

Long has the US and other nations abused and destroyed smaller nations to gain what the want and need. These wars are the result of the US decisions of the past, coming back to haunt them.

You are seriously disillusioned if you think this was a good choice, sending your child to war ?

This is a war based on religion, and BS rhetoric.

I would be ashamed if I made the choice to send my son or daughter to war for a cause that is a so full of holes, it reminds me of the weapons of mass destruction BS that your awesome President fooled the world with.

You know I preferred the days when I was trying to figure out how Clinton likes bigger women and why ? Rather then trying to figure out how some Texan, completely blew two whole terms of Presidency, depleted the military by spreading the manpower thin, and losing complete focus on how to run that great superpower and alienating everyone.

I support the troops, unfortunately I would be horribly ashamed of voting in the President who killed so many parents children for a useless cause.

Woohoo, living soldiers get double pensions, and living soldiers get stuff ! Woohoo !

Too bad that does not bring back the soldiers that died in the vietnam war, the iraqi wars and afghanistan war !

… and lest we forget to repair the minds and limbs of the brave soldiers who survived and have a forfeited life due to inadequate health care, inadequate emotional support and lack of interest from government after the fact.

Yeah … not on your life would my child go to war.

A little history education and its an easy choice.”

“The bottom line is, the United States is the world’s sole remaining superpower. No matter who is in office, Republican or Democrat, the president is going to look after the national interests of the United States. If he didn’t, how long do you think he would stay in office? Americans can impeach their leaders if they don’t like them.

Through the 90s, the US threw the Iraqi people to the wolves for all intensive purposes. Encouraging revolts and then withholding support, massive sanctions that hurt nobody but the people of Iraq.

Then all of a sudeen, post-911, the US goes in on a platform of saving the Iraqi people from tyranny? Please. The US was serving its own interests.

Afghanistan was a hell hole, from the point that the Soviets left all the way through the 90s. The US government was perfectly aware of what the situation was and did nothing. Now the US wants to save the Afghan people?

The US is looking after its national interests.

In the same way that Russia, China, France and Germany were when they tried to block OIF.

Soldiers serve their country, and the manner in which they serve is determined by elected officials, who serve the national interests of the state. The national interests of the state are determined by the voters, and what they want.

Americans want huge SUVs, and all manner of gas driven toys? They have a massive economy, that needs to grow to support the growing consumer demands of the public. Guess what the main national interest has to be. Oil.

Bush and his people are serving the national interests of the United States. Love em or hate em, it is what they are doing. For the moment, operations in Afghanistan and Iraq serve the national interests of the US. When they no longer serve, they won’t be there.

Canada is the same, though admittedly on a smaller scale.”

“I despise US foreign policy. But I have to give Bush credit, he is looking out for US national interests; albeit US corporate interests. He wants to secure energy for the US and wean the US off dependency of oil from volatile regions, which is why he’s looking to the Canadian oil sands.

Here in Canada our government (as well as previous ones - both Conservative and Liberal) seem not to care enough about having a secure supply of energy for Canadians. We don’t have a strategic oil reserve. We import about half of our own energy needs. And about half of that comes from volatile regions of the world, the same regions the US wants to wean itself from.

All the while we are importing half of our energy needs we are shipping over 60% of our Canadian oil to the US and 60% of our natural gas as well.

Doesn’t anyone else find it odd that our government who claims to be protectors of our sovereignty, seems to be more concerned about securing Americas energy supply over our own?

I think its time to secure our own energy supplies and then any excess can be sold internationally.”
