“What I really want to know is … how did these trained soldiers not know the difference between blanks and live munitions… I mean … Their are major differences in their appearance. This could only have been done by willful neglect.”
“In the Canadian military, when using blank rounds, we attached Blank Firing Attachments (BFAs) to our weapons. The only person who would have been injured, if live ammo were inadvertantly used, would have been the soldier firing the weapon.
Granted, this may not have been an option if the firearm was a handgun, but if 17 people were shot accidentally, it sounds like a fully automatic weapon. Such a weapon should never have been used with blank rounds without a BFA.”
“I AM a firearms enthusiast. The very first rule is to not point any firearm at anything you are not prepared to shoot. This includes targets, trees and … people. An incident like this calls into question the judgment of all the military personnel involved.”
“Before you start throwing blame around, just remember that such accidents have happened here to. In 9174, 6 cadets were killed and forty injured when a grenade exploded during a demonstration.
The grenade was supposed to be an exercise granade (a dud) but, somehow, live ammo got mixed in.
Accidents happen. I agree that a weapon, empty or not, should NEVER be pointed towards a crowd exactly for these reasons.
Let’s hope nobody dies from this amd, assuming this IS an accident, let’s not forget the soldier himself. He’s probably dealing with a lot of emotion right now…”
“I cannot believe that a “Thank you for your support” open house to foster increased relations between the armed forces and the community required having guns pointed at civilians. If it was a demostration, ought they have used a well coordinated military operation with military personnel and have the general public behind safety barriers. Something is really amiss here and I cannot even fathom how anyone could have thought this was a good idea, even with blanks used.
I guess we will find out soon enough.”
